Greta Thunberg Calls COP28 a ‘Betrayal’
Greta Thunberg said she’s not happy with what happened at COP28. She called it a “betrayal and a stab in the back.” COP28, in the United Arab Emirates, talked about moving away from fossil fuels but didn’t do everything civil society and countries affected by climate change wanted.
Greta talked on social media, saying this wasn’t a “historic win.” She thinks the agreement is not good enough to keep global warming below 1.5°C and make sure things are fair.
At a protest in Sweden, Greta said the agreement is the least they can do and not a real “first step.” She wants quick cuts in pollution, promises from big countries, and money to help the places most affected.
Greta also said the U.N. meetings don’t help. She thinks leaders use them to look good without doing much. She didn’t like that people from small islands weren’t in the room when they agreed on things.
Greta explained what she thinks would be good for the climate. She wants pollution to go down a lot and promises from big countries to help. She thinks the most affected places need money for problems and changes.
Greta’s ideas are like what other activists and scientists said. They don’t like that COP28 didn’t do enough for the 1.5°C goal, didn’t give enough money to poorer countries, and let things like carbon capture and storage continue.
Some scientists want everyone to work together to stop using fossil fuels. They say COP28 lets rich countries and big companies keep hurting the planet. They want everyone to act now to stop the worst from happening.
